Northern Shrimp: Interactive Map | Time Series Maps | Downloads | Project Overview |

Welcome to the Gulf of Maine Northern Shrimp Demonstration Project

The Gulf of Maine northern shrimp catch has fluctuated widely over the past decades. The dynamic nature of this fishery is in part due to the fact that northern shrimp are at their southern limit in the Gulf of Maine. Therefore, changes in environmental conditions such as water temperature and salinity may have a significant impact on the shrimp population. In order to better understand and manage this fishery it is important to bring together various data sets on shrimp biomass along with data on the environmental conditions that influence the northern shrimp.

This pilot project integrates northern shrimp fishery catch information, fishery independent survey information along with environmental and other relevant information about the Gulf of Maine into an easy-to-use internet mapping site. The site was designed to provide resource managers and fishermen with information about the northern shrimp fishery and the environmental conditions that influence it.

Interactive Map

The interactive map allows users to map shrimp catch and survey information from multiple data sources on to one map. Users can also overlay other important information such as bathymetry and sea surface temperature satellite images on to the map. The interactive map has standard mapping tools such as pan and zoom along with special features. The interactive map is powered by MapServer, an opensource development environment for building spatially enabled Internet applications and used under this license.

Time Series Maps

This tool allows users to generate and compare multiple maps of shrimp catch and survey data over many years.
